Prepare for a vocal session

Strong lead vocals rarely happen by accident. The days before your Vocal recording at Monimiavyra in De Pijp decide how many takes you need and how fresh you sound in our iso booth.

Why prep saves studio time

At Monimiavyra, Vocal recording starts at €95 per hour, with €325 half-day and €580 full-day blocks. That time works best when lyrics, tempo and structure are settled. Rewriting lines in the booth burns takes and focus.

We have 2 iso booths across 3 rooms; the engineer sets monitoring and gain before you sing. You do not need to know which of our 28 preamps we pick — you do need a clear plan. See Vocal recording and FAQ for the full workflow.

One week ahead

Avoid heavy gigs or all-day rehearsals right before the session. If you are tracking several songs, pick one priority for this booking: lead, doubles or choir. The rest can follow in another slot.

Freeze lyrics in a version you share via contact or bring on paper. Mark ad-libs, breath spots and whisper or shout sections. Listen to the instrumentals daily: know downbeats and bridges without hunting. Note bpm and any timecode if you sync to picture.

The night before

Sleep beats any warm-up hack. A short night shows in pitch, breath support and patience. Go easy on alcohol; it dries mucous membranes. Very spicy food can trigger reflux overnight — milder meals help.

Pack lyrics, charger, your own headphones if you rely on them, water, honey or non-menthol lozenges. Getting here: Metro line 52 (North/South) stop De Pijp; from there it is about a 6-minute walk via Ferdinand Bolstraat to Van Woustraat 78. Tram 3 runs along Van Woustraat; from the Van Woustraat stop it is roughly a 2-minute walk. From Amsterdam Centraal, metro 52 towards Zuid takes about 15 minutes.. Our hours: Wednesday–Friday 10:00–20:00, Saturday 11:00–16:00. Closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.. Free cancellation applies up to 5 days ahead; after that our 30% deposit applies per terms and conditions.

Session day

Sip water through the morning; vocal fold hydration takes time. Many singers skip dairy two to three hours before recording. Moderate coffee is fine for most voices; a large espresso right before the booth can add tremor.

Eat lightly about two hours ahead: fruit, nuts, soup. A full stomach limits the diaphragm; an empty one drains long phrases. Arrive ten minutes early — rushing from De Pijp metro does not help. Call 020 261 3847 if you are late.

Warm up without shredding

Start with shoulders, neck and jaw — tension there often lives in the throat. Breath work: long exhales on “ss” or “ff”, then lip trills or soft sirens in mid range. Stay below show volume until you are on mic.

Sing an easy verse before the highest chorus. For rap or spoken word, run articulation drills slowly, then build tempo. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough; shouting in the hallway does not help.

In the booth: headphones and distance

Our engineer sets gain and cue mix before serious takes. Say if you hear yourself too loud or too quiet; too quiet makes you push, too loud flattens dynamics. Many vocalists half-remove one earcup for natural resonance — we adjust the mix to limit bleed.

Keep distance steady: about a hand width to the pop filter, step back on loud peaks. Ask for short breaks; silence and water beat ten tired takes. We often schedule doubles and choir after the lead when your voice is warm.

What we prepare

Before you arrive we load your backing track, mark structure and shortlist mics from your brief (bright pop, warm soul, close rap). We have worked in De Pijp since 2019; booths are compact but isolated, with a separate 9 m² narration space if you later need voice-over.

Session files stay in our archive for 24 months per studio rules. Raw multitrack is not automatic take-home; stems and mixes are agreed via stem delivery specs or Mixing. Post-mix revisions follow terms with up to 2 rounds where applicable.
